“Once you go full black, you ain't never going back!”
American Fiction (2023) charts the disillusioned trajectory of a novelist who, tired of seeing the establishment profit from "Black" creativity, assumes a pseudonym to pen a provocative novel. This act thrusts him into the vortex of cultural appropriation and hypocrisy, where the author's disdain for the system he critiques becomes entangled with his own compromises and delusions. Director DeShaun Taylor's lens captures the irony and absurdity of an artist struggling to remain authentic while inadvertently mirroring the very corruption he denounces.
