American Me (1992) charts the cyclical descent of Santana, a former street-gang leader, from his iron-fisted rule in Folsom Prison to the fractured streets of East Los Angeles. After an 18-year incarceration, Santana seeks a quiet life, only to find his old world pulling at his frayed threads of redemption. The film unspools his reluctant return to a life of crime, where loyalty and violence are inescapable facets of a past he can neither outrun nor outrank.
