Cruel Intentions (1999) is a sleek, amoral update of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, in which the step-siblings Kathryn and Sebastian wager their purity and prized possessions on seducing the virginal Cecile. A cynical dance of sexual politics and social manipulation, the film revels in the decadent, calculating nature of its protagonists, whose gamesmanship is as much a commentary on the moral decay of the upper class as it is a seductive tale of forbidden love and revenge.
