“This is no game.”
Dungeons & Dragons (2000) unfolds in the fractious Empire of Izmer, where the ruling elite, known as mages, wield absolute power over the disenfranchised masses. Empress Savina's promise of equality and prosperity sets the stage for Profion's malevolent machinations to usurp the throne. Director Peter Jackson's pre-Hobbit fantasy film, however, falters in its execution, with a script that struggles to balance whimsical humor and darker themes, ultimately failing to deliver the depth and cohesion one might expect from its high-concept premise.
