“Lowest rank, loudest justice.”
Hail the Judge (1994) skewers legal corruption through the tale of Pao Lung Sing, a ninth-degree judge mired in graft, who undergoes a moral awakening when defending Chi Siu-Lin, a woman unjustly accused of murdering her husband. Forced into exile, Pao reforms and ascends to the first degree, returning to upend the corrupt system and mete out justice to the guilty. Director Stanley Kwan's sharp satire blends drama with wit, exposing the hypocrisy at the heart of Hong Kong's judicial order.
