“The world was in a mess... but their hair was perfect!!”
Set in the racially charged summer of 1962 Baltimore, John Waters' "Hairspray" chronicles the ascent of Tracy Turnblad, a zaftig teen with big dreams and a bigger heart, who vaults to stardom on the local dance show. Her overnight fame propels her into the spotlight, where she campaigns for racial equality, much to the chagrin of Amber Von Tussle, the show's reigning queen bee, and her parents, who wield influence and prejudice. As Tracy and Amber compete for the coveted Miss Auto Show title, their rivalry crystallizes the era's social tensions, setting the stage for a transformative showdown.
