“Shoot first. Sightsee later.”
In Bruges, hit men Ray and Ken, marooned in the Flemish city’s cobblestone lanes and fairy-tale spires, navigate a purgatory of conscience and camaraderie. Ray, an irascible American, and Ken, a boyish Englishman, idle away days in contemplation and tourist traps, their uneasy rapport strained by revelations of their last job. As the pair’s moral calculus shifts, so too does the film’s tone, toggling between dark humor and existential dread. Martin McDonagh’s debut feature is a sardonic meditation on guilt and redemption, framed by the picturesque yet oppressive beauty of Bruges.
