Red Cliff

Red Cliff (2008) reenacts the pivotal Battle of Red Cliffs in 208 AD, where the Han Dynasty’s Prime Minister Cao Cao, under the emperor’s dubious patronage, initiates a campaign to unify China through military might. Facing insurmountable odds, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu, traditional rivals, forge a tenuous alliance to thwart Cao Cao’s ambitions. Zhang Yimou’s epic visualizes the strategic maneuvering and fierce combat with lavish spectacle and poetic intimacy, capturing the shifting loyalties and moral ambiguities of a divided nation.
