In 1939, Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer travels to the Himalayas to lead an expedition, only to be detained as a prisoner of war upon the outbreak of World War II. Escaping with a fellow captive, Harrer reaches Lhasa, where he befriends the young Dalai Lama, whose innocence and wisdom begin to mend the mountaineer's fractured worldview, reshaping his perspective on life and humanity.
