Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons lead a cast of eccentrics in Roland Joffé's brooding epic, set in the wilds of colonial South America. A Spanish Jesuit (De Niro) establishes a mission among indigenous tribes, only to have his peaceful sanctuary threatened by the iron-fisted policies of the Portuguese. Alongside a reluctant convert played by Irons, he navigates the treacherous politics of the age, where faith and survival clash in a rain-soaked tableau of moral and physical conflict.
