Rolled into the tumult of the American Revolution, The Patriot finds Benjamin Martin, a war-weary veteran of the French and Indian War, seeking solace in the quietude of rural life. Yet, when his eldest son Gabriel joins the fight for American independence against the British, Martin is compelled to leave his farm and rekindle his military prowess. Robert Rodat's screenplay and Roland Emmerich's direction weave a tapestry of familial duty and patriotic fervor, anchored by a nuanced performance from Mel Gibson as a man torn between peace and the call of duty.
