Ser Hugh of the Vale was a newly made knight from the Vale of Arryn who had served as squire to Lord Jon Arryn for four years. After Arryn's death he was knighted by King Robert Baratheon and remained in King's Landing in royal service rather than returning to the Eyrie.
In Game of Thrones he appears during the first season, when he is killed by a splintered lance in a joust against Ser Gregor Clegane at the Hand's tournament. His sudden wealth and death lead Eddard Stark to suspect he had been involved in the mystery surrounding Jon Arryn's death.
