Jack was a Northern boy orphaned during the War of the Five Kings and fostered by a shepherd near Winterfell. Along with another boy, Billy, he was placed in the shepherd's care by Bran Stark during Bran's brief time as acting lord of Winterfell.
In Game of Thrones, Jack meets a grim end after Theon Greyjoy seizes Winterfell: unable to recapture the escaped Stark boys, Theon's men kill Jack and Billy and present their charred bodies as those of Bran and Rickon. His killing is later a source of guilt referenced across several seasons.
