Will was a ranger of the Night's Watch in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Not of noble birth, he was remembered by First Ranger Benjen Stark as a reliable soldier and a "true ranger."
In the series premiere, Will rode beyond the Wall with Ser Waymar Royce and Gared to investigate reports of wildlings, and witnessed a White Walker slaughter his companions. He fled south in terror and was captured near Winterfell, where Lord Eddard Stark, disbelieving his account, executed him as a deserter with the Valyrian steel sword Ice.
Will's execution opens the story and introduces both the threat beyond the Wall and Ned Stark's stern sense of justice. This overview is drawn from the Game of Thrones Wiki under CC BY-SA; on-screen chronology is covered in the Timeline.
