Deagol, also known by the Westron name Nahald, was a Stoor-hobbit and the cousin and best friend of Smeagol. While fishing in the Gladden River he discovered the One Ring half-buried in the riverbed, becoming its third bearer after Isildur.
When Smeagol demanded the Ring as a birthday present and Deagol refused, Smeagol strangled him to death, a deed that would haunt the creature Gollum for the rest of his life. Deagol appears in the animated 1978 Lord of the Rings and in Peter Jackson's The Return of the King, where he is played by Thomas Robins.
