Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock, knighted in 1979, was an English film director whose career spanned six decades and over fifty films, making him a towering figure in cinema history. Known as the "Master of Suspense," Hitchcock rose from a title card designer to directing "The Pleasure Garden" in 1925, and by the late 1930s, he was internationally renowned, prompting his move to Hollywood. His films, from "Rebecca" to "Vertigo," garnered 46 Academy Award nominations but never a Best Director win. Hitchcock’s distinct presence, through cameos and his television series "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," secured his celebrity status. His meticulous craftsmanship and enduring influence are underscored by nine of his films in the National Film Registry.
