Claude Rains

Claude Rains, born William Claude Rains in 1889, rose from a London childhood marred by a cockney accent and speech impediment to become a pillar of Hollywood. His father, Frederick Rains, steered him toward the stage, where Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree's elocution lessons and mentorship paved the way for a prolific career. Rains' wartime service, including a gas attack that left him partially blind, underscored his resilience. His transition to film was marked by early failure but the serendipitous casting in "The Invisible Man" (1933) and subsequent roles, like the duplicitous Captain Renault in "Casablanca" (1942), solidified his status as an actor of understated power and versatility.
