Dennis Weaver

Dennis Weaver, born in 1924 in Joplin, Missouri, rose from a Broadway understudy to become a television icon, notably as Marshal Matt Dillon's deputy Chester Goode on "Gunsmoke" and as the titular character in "McCloud." His career spanned decades, from early films like "The Redhead from Wyoming" to Steven Spielberg's debut "Duel" and Orson Welles's "Touch of Evil," where he delivered a memorable performance as a motel attendant. A track star and war pilot, Weaver balanced acting with odd jobs before landing his breakthrough role, contributing to the legacy of one of television's longest-running series. His work continued through the 1970s, earning him Emmy nominations, until his death in 2006.
