Eiji Okada, born in Chōshi, Chiba, in 1920, led a life marked by diverse experiences before carving a niche in cinema. His wartime service in the Japanese army was followed by stints as a miner and traveling salesman. Okada's pivotal roles include Lui in Alain Resnais' "Hiroshima mon amour" and the entomologist Niki Junpei in Hiroshi Teshigahara's adaptation of Kōbō Abe's "Woman in the Dunes."
