Fred Astaire

Fred Astaire, born Frederick Austerlitz in Omaha, Nebraska in 1899, emerged from vaudeville and Broadway to become an icon of Hollywood musicals, influencing dance on film for decades. Partnering with his sister Adele for 27 years before her retirement in 1932, Astaire's transition to Hollywood saw him team with Ginger Rogers, producing nine classic RKO pictures. His repertoire expanded to include Cyd Charisse, Rita Hayworth, and others, while he also ventured into dramatic roles. Active until the late 1960s, Astaire's enduring legacy is marked by his innovative choreography and enduring appeal, extending his influence into radio and recordings. He died in Los Angeles in 1987.
