Gugu Mbatha-Raw, born in 1983, ascended from the National Youth Music Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to star in Shakespearean roles at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, earning her a West End and Broadway debut as Ophelia in 2009.
