Jack Palance, born Volodymyr Palahniuk in Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania, to Ukrainian immigrants, was a consummate character actor whose career spanned six decades. After military service and a brief stint at Stanford, he entered the theater before transitioning to film with Panic in the Streets. Palance's screen persona was defined by his rugged, menacing presence, earning him Academy Award nominations for Sudden Fear and Shane, and a long-overdue win for his role in City Slickers. His versatility saw him essay Count Dracula and crime lord Yves Perret, among other iconic parts, and he hosted Ripley's Believe It or Not! for four years. Palance's life and career were marked by an enduring, no-frills toughness, passing away peacefully in 2006.
