James Arness

James Arness, towering at 6'6", emerged from a Norwegian heritage in Minneapolis to become a star of TV’s longest-running Western, Gunsmoke (1955), a role secured by John Wayne's persuasion. Drafted in 1943, Arness was gravely wounded in Italy, scars that marked his body and career trajectory. A stint in radio and small film roles, notably as a menacing alien in "The Thing from Another World" (1951), preceded his transformation into Marshal Matt Dillon. Despite initial reservations, Arness's six-foot-six frame and Wayne's mentorship defined his rugged frontier heroism, extending beyond Gunsmoke's 1975 finale into a career marked by iconic Western roles and a brief foray into modern policing.
