Kinuyo Tanaka, born in 1909 in Shimonoseki, rose to prominence at seventeen, starring in Heinosuke Gosho’s “An Embarrassing Dream.” Her career flourished under directors like Yasujirō Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi, whose films “The Life of Oharu,” “Ugetsu,” and “Sansho the Bailiff” showcased her versatility. Mizoguchi’s interference in her directorial aspirations, however, soured their relationship. Tanaka’s second directorial effort earned her the Best Actress award at the 25th Berlin International Film Festival for “Sandakan No. 8,” cementing her status as a pioneering female filmmaker in Japan.
