Kwan Hoi-San

Herman Kwan Hoi-San, born in 1925 in Guangzhou, began his career in Cantonese opera, performing in street theatre and recording early film soundtracks. His transition to film saw him starring in adaptations of opera, establishing a formidable reputation in lead roles. However, as Hong Kong cinema shifted towards Mandarin, Kwan’s opportunities dwindled, leading him to take on varied roles in television. A stroke in 2001 left him mute and paralysed, but his earlier work continued to resonate, with directors casting him in supporting roles that showcased his enduring talent. He passed away in 2006, leaving a legacy marked by his versatility and resilience.
