Machiko Kyō

Machiko Kyō, born in 1924, trained as a dancer before transitioning to films in 1949, quickly scaling the heights of Japanese cinema with roles in Akira Kurosawa's Rashōmon and Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu. Her career spanned decades, encompassing classics like Teinosuke Kinugasa's Gate of Hell and Yasujirō Ozu's Floating Weeds. Kyō's sole non-Japanese film appearance was in The Teahouse of the August Moon, earning her a Golden Globe nomination. She continued to perform into her eighties, receiving accolades including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Japanese Academy, cementing her legacy as one of Japan's most revered actresses.
