Masaki Kobayashi

Masaki Kobayashi, born on February 14, 1916, and deceased on October 4, 1996, was a Japanese director whose films, including the ghostly quartet Kwaidan and the nine-hour epic The Human Condition, established him as a formidable voice in cinema. His work on Harakiri won him accolades at Cannes and cemented his reputation. Drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, Kobayashi, a pacifist, refused to fight and declined promotions, a stance mirrored in his filmmaking, which often critiqued the rigidity of Japanese society. Despite being considered for Tora! Tora! Tora!, he was eventually passed over, yet his influence endures through films like Samurai Rebellion and his jury role at the Berlin International Film Festival.
