Richard Burton, a Welsh actor born Richard Walter Jenkins Jr. in 1925, rose to prominence in the 1950s as a Shakespearean virtuoso, with Kenneth Tynan anointing him "the natural successor to Olivier." Despite his mellifluous baritone and critical acclaim, including seven Oscar nominations, Burton's struggles with alcohol and perceived failure to meet his early promise left him a tragic figure. Nevertheless, his performances earned him BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Tony Awards, and he became one of the highest-paid actors of his era, alongside his tumultuous marriage to Elizabeth Taylor, which captivated the public eye.
