Ryusuke Hamaguchi, a Japanese filmmaker and screenwriter with degrees from Tokyo University and the Tokyo University of Arts, emerged with his graduation project Passion in 2008. Gaining international acclaim with Happy Hour in 2015, he solidified his reputation with Asako I & II in 2018. In 2021, Hamaguchi released Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and Drive My Car, the latter earning him three Academy Award nominations, including Best Director, making him the third Japanese filmmaker to achieve this distinction.
