Zhang Yimou

Zhang Yimou, born in 1950 or 1951, is a Chinese filmmaker whose work spans direction, production, writing, and acting, alongside his earlier role as a cinematographer. A pivotal figure in the Fifth Generation of Chinese cinema, he debuted in 1987 with "Red Sorghum" and has since accumulated accolades, including Venice Film Festival Silver and Golden Lions, a Cannes Grand Jury Prize, and a Berlin International Film Festival Golden Bear. Zhang’s narratives often centre on Chinese resilience amid adversity, as seen in "To Live" and "Not One Less". His aesthetic is distinguished by vivid colour palettes evident in films like "Raise the Red Lantern" and the wuxia epics "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers".
