Bruce Maddox was a prominent 24th-century Human Starfleet cyberneticist, working in the Cybernetics Division of the Daystrom Institute where he rose to Chair of Robotics. Inspired by the work of Noonien Soong, he devoted his career to the creation of artificial life.
Maddox is best remembered for his 2365 attempt to have the android Data disassembled and reverse-engineered, which led to a landmark legal hearing that affirmed Data's rights as a sentient being. The experience gradually led Maddox to see Data as a person rather than a machine.
After the 2385 Attack on Mars and the Federation's ban on synthetics, Maddox went into hiding and, with Altan Soong, established a colony of organic androids on Coppelius, developing fractal neuronic cloning and creating the android sisters Soji and Dahj Asha. He was killed in 2399 by his former lover Agnes Jurati. Maddox appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Picard.
