Captain Bryce Shumar was a Human Starfleet officer who commanded the USS Essex during the mid-22nd century. He and his entire crew were killed in 2167 when the Essex was destroyed at a moon of Mab-Bu VI, after being attacked by disembodied criminal entities from the Ux-Mal system who sought to seize the crew's bodies.
Nearly two centuries later, in 2368, those same entities attempted to escape again by possessing crewmembers of the USS Enterprise-D. One entity, inhabiting Counselor Deanna Troi, impersonated Shumar's spirit in an effort to convince Captain Jean-Luc Picard of its story, but the deception ultimately failed. Shumar appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
