Dr. Carol Marcus was one of the Federation's leading scientists and the creator of Project Genesis — a device capable of reorganizing matter to bring life to lifeless worlds. She led her research team aboard the station Regula I, working alongside her son, David Marcus, whom she raised largely apart from his father, Starfleet officer James T. Kirk.
When Khan Noonien Singh seized the Genesis Device in 2285, Marcus was drawn back into Kirk's orbit and reunited David with his father, before later losing her son to the Klingons on the Genesis Planet.
