Leonard H. McCoy, affectionately nicknamed "Bones," is a Human Starfleet physician in the Star Trek universe, best known as the chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk during the 23rd century. An accomplished surgeon and exobiologist, he was regarded as an expert in space psychology.
Born in Georgia on Earth in 2227, McCoy studied medicine and joined Starfleet, serving as the Enterprise's chief medical officer during its historic five-year mission. Together with Kirk and the Vulcan Spock, he formed one of the franchise's defining trios, often voicing the compassionate, humane counterpoint to Spock's logic.
McCoy's long career spanned the 23rd and 24th centuries, ultimately reaching the rank of admiral. The character appears in Star Trek: The Original Series, The Animated Series, the original-cast feature films, and a cameo in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
