Murf was a Mellanoid slime worm and one of the young crew members of the USS Protostar, appearing in Star Trek: Prodigy. A jelly-like, seemingly indestructible creature of unknown age and origin, Murf was discovered at the Tars Lamora prison colony in 2383 by Rok-Tahk, who gave him his name. Fond of ingesting mechanical equipment and able to survive even the vacuum of space, Murf served as an unlikely but effective member of the crew.
After escaping Tars Lamora aboard the Protostar, Murf undergrew a period of metamorphosis, emerging from a cocoon in a new humanoid-shaped form. His formidable resilience and combat instincts led the crew to embrace him as their security officer. Following the crew's efforts to warn Starfleet, Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway argued on their behalf, and Murf went on to serve aboard the USS Voyager-A and later received a field commission as an ensign aboard the USS Prodigy.
Though Murf could not speak intelligibly, he communicated in his own way and even adopted a holodeck persona as the jazz singer "Mr. Murfy No Shoes". His vocal effects were provided by Dee Bradley Baker. This overview summarizes material from Memory Alpha under CC BY-SA; see the Timeline for chronology.
