Samuel L. "Sam" Clemens, the American author and humorist best known by the pseudonym Mark Twain, appears in Star Trek as a character encountered by the crew of the USS Enterprise-D. In 1893 San Francisco, the disenchanted writer crossed paths with a time-stranded Data and Guinan and, misreading their purpose, became convinced that visitors from the future intended harm to humanity.
Pursuing the mystery, Clemens followed the away team through a Devidian temporal portal into the 24th century, where a tour of the Enterprise-D and a conversation with Counselor Deanna Troi persuaded him of the future's merits. He returned to his own time to help rescue Captain Picard, who had been trapped in the past. Played by Jerry Hardin, Clemens appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
