Saru is a Kelpien Starfleet officer and central character of Star Trek: Discovery. Born on Kaminar, he was the first of his species to leave his homeworld and to enter Starfleet, recruited after making contact with Lieutenant Philippa Georgiou.
Saru served as science officer aboard the USS Shenzhou and later as first officer and eventual commanding officer of the USS Discovery through the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-57, for which he received the Starfleet Medal of Honor.
