Doctor Tolian Soran was an El-Aurian scientist whose family was killed when the Borg destroyed the El-Aurian homeworld, an event that left him profoundly embittered. Rescued from the energy ribbon known as the Nexus in 2293, he became obsessed over the following decades with returning to that realm, where his lost life could be restored.
To re-enter the Nexus, Soran plotted to destroy stars regardless of the inhabited worlds that would perish, a scheme that made him indirectly responsible for the death of James T. Kirk.
