Sifo-Dyas was a Force-sensitive human male who served as a Jedi Master and, for a time, a member of the Jedi High Council of the Galactic Republic. Convinced that the galaxy was drifting toward a great conflict, he privately argued that the Republic should raise an army to defend itself—a position that put him at odds with the Jedi Order's pacifist leanings.
Acting in secret, Sifo-Dyas commissioned the cloners of Kamino to produce a clone army for the Republic. Unbeknownst to him, the Sith co-opted the project: on the orders of Darth Tyranus, he was lured to Oba Diah and assassinated, allowing the Sith to seize control of the clone program he had set in motion.
Though he died years before the fighting began, the army Sifo-Dyas initiated became the Grand Army of the Republic that fought the Clone Wars, and the mystery of who had placed the order drove a Jedi investigation into his fate.
