“A big story of a little man which will grip your soul...”
Akira Kurosawa’s “Ikiru” unspools the somnambulant life of Kanji Watanabe, a weary bureaucrat whose existence is punctuated by tedium and routine. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Watanabe grapples with the futility of his life, a quest that leads him into the arms of the city’s underbelly and the company of a young woman who revives his sense of purpose. Through its piercing lens, the film casts a critical eye on the human condition, questioning the value of existence in the face of impending mortality.
