Akira Kurosawa

Akira Kurosawa, a Japanese filmmaker and painter, directed thirty films over five decades, establishing himself as one of cinema’s most influential auteurs. His bold, dynamic style, infused with Western influences yet uniquely Japanese, saw him involved in all aspects of production. After a brief career as a painter, Kurosawa entered the film industry in 1936, assisting on numerous projects before directing Sanshiro Sugata in 1943. Drunken Angel in 1948, featuring Toshiro Mifune, marked the beginning of a prolific collaboration and international acclaim, notably with Rashomon’s Golden Lion win at Venice in 1951. The 1950s and early 1960s saw classics like Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, while later works, including Kagemusha and Ran, maintained critical success. Kurosawa received the Academy Honorary Award in 1990 and posthumously was recognized as Asian of the Century by AsianWeek and CNN.
