Postwar Vienna teems with decay and disillusion as Holly Martins, a pulp Western writer down on his luck, arrives to visit his childhood friend Harry Lime, only to find him dead. Convinced of a conspiracy, Martins unravels a web of deceit, encountering the obstructive Major Calloway and the enigmatic Anna, Lime's estranged lover. Amid the city's shadows, Martins' search for the elusive "third man" exposes the moral ambiguities and treacherous alliances of a world reeling from war.
