Joffrey Baratheon is a character in the HBO series Game of Thrones, portrayed as the eldest son of Queen Cersei Lannister and, publicly, of King Robert Baratheon. In truth he is a bastard born of the incestuous union between Cersei and her twin brother Jaime Lannister, a secret whose discovery helps set the realm on the path to civil war.
Ascending to the Iron Throne as a boy-king after Robert's death, Joffrey rules with cruelty and caprice. His decision to execute Lord Eddard Stark on false charges of treason shatters the fragile peace and ignites the War of the Five Kings. Betrothed first to Sansa Stark and later wed to Margaery Tyrell, he is remembered as one of the most reviled monarchs to sit the throne.
