Mance Rayder is the King-Beyond-the-Wall, the leader who unites the Free Folk in HBO's Game of Thrones. Born a wildling but raised in the Night's Watch after being left at the Wall as an infant, he served as a noted ranger before deserting to rejoin his own people, rising by acclamation to a title reserved for whoever can bind the fractious wildling clans into one host.
Across the series he assembles an army of dozens of tribes, giants and wargs and marches south, driven above all by the need to move his people beyond the Wall ahead of the White Walkers. He captures Jon Snow and comes to trust him, only to be betrayed at Castle Black. Defeated when Stannis Baratheon's cavalry falls on the wildling host, Mance surrenders but refuses to kneel; sentenced to burn, he is spared further suffering when Jon Snow shoots him through the heart. He is portrayed by Ciaran Hinds. Chronology is tracked in the Timeline.
