Barliman Butterbur is a Man of Bree and the good-hearted, forgetful owner of The Prancing Pony inn. Fond of hobbits and a longtime acquaintance of Gandalf, he is notorious for his very bad memory.
He famously forgets to forward Gandalf's warning letter to Frodo, delaying the hobbits' journey, but shelters them at his inn and produces Strider's credentials. He appears in Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring and earlier adaptations.
