Gandalf, originally the Maia Olórin and known to the Elves as Mithrandir, is one of the Istari (Wizards) sent to Middle-earth to oppose Sauron. Bearer of the Elven Ring Narya and a member of the White Council, he is counsellor and guide to the Free Peoples across the Third Age.
Known first as Gandalf the Grey and later, after his fall and return, as Gandalf the White, he sets in motion the Quest of Erebor with Thorin Oakenshield and helps form the Fellowship of the Ring. He appears throughout Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. His involvement in the War of the Ring and its battles is detailed in the Timeline.
