Girion was the last Lord of Dale, ruling the city in friendship with the Dwarves of Erebor until he was killed when the dragon Smaug descended and destroyed both realms. His line survived through his heirs, and generations later his descendant Bard slew Smaug.
In the Hobbit films a flashback shows Girion loosing black arrows at Smaug from a Dwarvish windlance, dislodging a single scale over the dragon's weak spot, the very flaw his descendant Bard would later exploit. He was portrayed by Luke Evans, who also plays Bard.
