Bard, called Bard the Bowman and Bard I, was a Man of Lake-town and a descendant of Lord Girion of Dale. A grim captain of the town's archers, he is best remembered as the slayer of the dragon Smaug: warned by a thrush of the beast's one bare spot, he loosed the Black Arrow that brought Smaug down over Esgaroth.
After the dragon's fall Bard organized aid for the survivors and sought a fair share of Erebor's hoard from Thorin, a dispute that helped bring on the Battle of Five Armies, in which he fought alongside the Elves of Mirkwood and the Dwarves of the Iron Hills against the Orcs of Bolg and Azog.
With the treasure he won, Bard rebuilt the ruined city and became the first King of the restored realm of Dale, keeping firm friendship and trade with the Dwarves under the Mountain until his death, when his son Bain succeeded him.
