Rutger Oelsen Hauer, born in Breukelen, Netherlands, in 1944, rose from a nautical yearning to an electrician's life before night classes honed his acting skills. His breakthrough came with the lead in "Floris," followed by international acclaim in "Turkish Delight." After minor Hollywood notice in "The Wilby Conspiracy," Hauer's star shone brightly in "Nighthawks" and, most memorably, as the enigmatic Roy Batty in "Blade Runner." A committed environmentalist, he founded the Rutger Hauer Starfish Foundation to raise AIDS awareness and supported Greenpeace efforts. His family includes wife Ineke and actress daughter Aysha.
