Ariel was one of the six elected members of the ruling council of Angel I, a matriarchal world, in 2364. When a Starfleet away team led by Commander William T. Riker visited the planet to search for survivors of the lost Federation freighter Odin, Ariel opposed their investigation and helped persuade Beata, the planet's Elected One, not to cooperate.
Ariel's resistance was personal: she was secretly married to Ramsey, one of the Odin's survivors, and was trying to shield him and the other castaways. Classified as rebels by the planet's leadership, the survivors advocated equal rights for men, a cause Beata regarded as a threat to the natural order of Angel I society.
After Beata had Ariel followed, the dissidents were located and initially condemned to death, though Riker's intervention spared their lives. Ariel subsequently lost her position and was exiled with Ramsey and the dissidents to a remote region of the planet. She appears in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Angel One."
